Historical Tours of Flagler College not to be missed

Category: St. Augustine   Published by

The most pleasant, informative, and convenient way to tour the historic city of St. Augustine is to take a trolley tour with the Old Town Trolley. Not only were we able to get on and off at all the important sites, we were also given informative information about the charming city of St. Augustine during on tour.  One of our favorite stops by far was the magnificent grace we experienced while touring Flagler College.

Flagler College was formerly the hotel Ponce de Leon and is listed as a National Historic Landmark. The former exclusive hotel is an exquisite example of Spanish Renaissance architecture.  The hotel was built by developer Henry M. Flagler in 1887. Surely there is not a liberal  arts college anywhere, that can boast the elegance of Louis Comfort Tiffany’s stained glass windows. What was originally the hotel’s grand Parlor, is now known as the Flagler room, here visitors admire Tiffany Austrian crystal chandeliers, and an impressive onyx Thomas Edison clock.  The grounds of the now four year liberal arts school are meticulously maintained.  I can hardly imagine having a college experience as royal as the students at Flagler College experience.

I highly recommend boarding a trolley and marking the stops that most appeal to you. You may get off and on as often as you like.  Each time you choose to tour a new attraction, you do not have to worry about the inconvenience of parking.  Your only concern, is how much of beautiful historic St. Augustine you would like to pack into your day. Though I strongly advise you, to make  touring Flagler college one of your stops.  You were surely get a great deal of bang for your buck. To tour tickets are  $7 for adults, $5 for St. Augustine residents with a valid ID, and $1 for children under the age of 12. The grandeur of Henry Flagler’s architecture should not be missed as a stop on your trolley tour of St. Augustine.

Key West Shipwreck Museum Review

Category: Key West   Published by

key west shipwreck museumIn May of 1822, Key West was established as a Port of Entry, requiring the salvage of all shipwrecks in surrounding waters to pass through its harbor. Wrecking became the primary business of the island city and by the middle of the 1800’s, it had made Key West the richest city per capita in the United States. Almost two hundred years later, guests at the Key West Shipwreck Treasures Museum can explore four centuries of shipwreck history, beginning with the first Native American salvagers and continuing through Key West’s rich wrecking era to present day. Two floors of shipwreck artifacts ranging from Spanish treasure to exotic cargos from faraway lands are exhibited throughout a re-creation of the 19th Century warehouse once owned by wrecker tycoon Asa Tift.

Finding Dolphins in Florida

Category: Key West,Orlando,Tampa   Published by

Of all the creatures in the sea, dolphins, hands down, win the popularity contest.  We are inexplicably drawn to them, we personify them, we see ourselves in them!

They appear playful, curious; they show off, display a certain joie de vivre, and even look us right in the eye – all personality traits we claim as our own!   Like us, they’re mammals, and are therefore warm-blooded, have lungs that breathe air, give birth to their young and nurse them.  Add these facts – they have large brains, live in complex societies, help one another, learn from experience.  It’s no wonder we’re intrigued.

Candlelight Walking Ghost Tour of Philadelphia

Ghost Tour of Philadelphia – Philadelphia, PA
Betsy Ross is one of Philadelphia’s most beloved icons-a local girl who garnered everlasting fame as the “Mother of the American Flag.” Betsy’s house still stands on Arch Street in the birthplace of the nation, the historic district of Philadelphia, and millions of people have walked through the storied halls of her modest dwelling.

But there is another side to Betsy’s story, one told only in whispers over the course of generations. In that unassuming house on Arch Street, the ghost of Betsy herself has been seen weeping at the foot of a bed in an upstairs bedroom. In the basement, a murky shadow appears, in the same place where a man was shot to death long ago. Betsy’s gravestone stands just outside of the house, but it hasn’t always. Her remains have been moved three times, and it only takes once to conjure a vengeful spirit.

Roseate Spoonbills

There are several reasons why the state of Florida is so popular with bird watchers. Birding in Florida contributes to the tourism economy of the area and brings in 2 million bird watchers each year. The diversity of habitat, its mix of temperate zones and its fortunate position as a point on migration routes have resulted in the documented sightings of over 500 species of birds, many of which are rare.

The most famous trail was introduced by The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to encourage conservation and to attract visitors. Named The Great Florida Birding Trail, it runs for 2,000 miles across 489 sites. There are guide books with maps and highway signs to guide visitors along the trail. Various eco-tours like Everglades Day Safari play an important part in birding in Florida, by educating the public and touring the natural habitats of various species.
